Officials are investigating two overnight fires on the same street in Penacook. Investigators said they’re still trying to figure out how the fires started on Village Street in the Concord village of Penacook.One fire was reported at about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday in a building that’s owned by Cheney’s Apple House Furniture.”When crews arrived on scene, they had heavy fire out of one of the corners of the building, and they knew the occupancy and that there was a lot of furniture in there,” said Concord Fire Chief John Chisholm. “Furniture burns very hot and it burns with very dangerous smoke.”Firefighters arrived to find heavy flame coming from the back corner of the building. They started a defensive fire attack, spraying water through the building’s windows.More than a dozen crews from other areas, as well as off-duty Concord firefighters, worked to put out the fire, which was under control by about 4:45 a.m.The chief said the heat did not make their job easier. “We have to pay a special attention to hydration levels, as well as going to our rehab center to make sure that the crews are ready to go back in and start working again,” Chisholm said.The other fire was in a gazebo by the playground of Penacook Elementary School, also on Village Street. Crews put out what was left of that fire and cleared the scene a little before 2 a.m.”Any time that there’s fires that are that close in time and distance from each other, it does make you raise an eyebrow,” Chisholm said. “So, just like we do with all fires in the city, we are going to do a full origin and cause investigation on each fire and then see if there’s anything concerning in either or both of them and then see if there’s any commonalities that would make us link something together.”The Concord Police Department is asking people to check their home camera systems for any suspicious activity around the time of the fires.
